The Star of David is a generally recognized symbol of modern Jewish identity and Judaism, but was not actually a uniquely Jewish symbol. It has been used in other types of motifs throughout human history, and wasn't until the 19th century when it became more prominent in Eastern European Jewish communities. The desire to represent Jewish faith or identity, in the same way the crucifix represents for Christians, was a motivating factor to adopt the Star of David more widely.
